DEREK JARMAN CONVERSAZIONI

DEREK JARMAN CONVERSATIONS
by Roberto Nanni
Country: Italy
Year: 1993
Duration: 30'

"Jubilee, John Major, the apocalypse of the Last of England, Yves Klein and Blue, Salò and Roma in 1947, his garden in Dungeness and the nearby nuclear power plant, Nizo Braun S. 8, the side effects of DHPG therapy, safe sex... A wave of stimuli for making up a conversation with Derek Jarman. Where do we start from? Derek suggests the beginning his recollections that we recreate together. London: August, 1982. Wapping Wall, Final Academy. Genesis POrridge, Brion Gysin, William Burroughs and The Dream Machine. I didn't know that man who was filming the Super8 was Derek Jarman. In my memory there are confused and fragmentary recollections. In his memory, there is the precise and recognizable recollection of the transparent paleness of an unknown twentytwo year old. Simon Fisher Turner tells me: Derek remembers everything, just everything. His fourday visit to Rome for the presentation of Blue at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni was the space in time when I collected and taped the materials that make up this work: be they 16mm, Super8, super VHS video, audio on Nagra, DAT or telecamera. This was a kind of 'carpe diem' sensitive to his desire to squeeze every moment of his visit to Rome. The composition of this text should not be read essentially as a conversation on his audacity as a filmmaker but as a mirror of his life. He himself affirms: 'The image is the prison of the soul, your inheritance, your education, your vices and aspirations, your qualities, and your psychological universe'." (Roberto Nanni)
