Four people are waiting on a train for it to leave. There are three men, including a sub-saharan African immigrant, and a woman. The thoughts and the dialogue of the tour passengers alternate with images of the real-life Milan made up of social outcasts and third- world immigrants. There are the places, the conditions, the instances of intolerance, and the evictions. The time for waiting becomes a time for distancing, for reflecting, and for comparing. The train will not leave...
"The reality of immigration is one that is changing and irksome... In There, Where Things... I attempted to create a composite discourse, so that I would distort the truth of the events to be observed as little as possible I interwove different languages - the language of the documentary, of fiction, of the investigative report, and of literature. In this way, I looked for the truth about immigration. This truth cannot be approached by means of a discourse that deals in fragments or in generalizations. Such a discourse would distort any reality and any imagination that were no longer screened off behind by the superficialities they had been seeing." (Emanuela De Marchi)

Emanuela De Marchi
Emanuela De Marchi (Trieste, 1963) is a university graduate in political science. She was awarded a diploma in directing at the Higher School of Social Communication, Milan. She has been managing secretary of the International Workshop for Communication since 1985. In 1988 she worked at the Budapest film studio, Kobanya Non Professional Film, directed by Gyorgy Szomajs. She collaborated in the executive production of the film, Italia 90: lavori in corso (1990). She was assistant director to Bruno Bigoni for the film Veleno, and to Krzysztof Kieslowski for Three Colors: Blue.
