Country: Italy
Year: 1993
Duration: 15'

The story of the "sassi" of Matera, which were abandoned in the 1950's after the De Gasperi's evacuation decree, is told through the personal recollections of those who have actually lived through that emblematic and traumatic passage from peasant to lowermiddleclass culture.

«Matera is a first in a series of documentaries that aim to tell the story of the development of Italy from the postwar period through the present, of the loss of its roots, and, by implication, of the present lack of balance. The series aims to do this by focusing on the histories of several particular places. The project is now in the phase of screenwriting." (Maria Venezia)
