"Some stories are hard to tell. I've never been able to tell the story of Oktyabr, and I think its because I knew right from the start that it was not a story but merely a premonition. Something I couldn't define. Like all my African co-disciples, I only knew one thing and had a hard time finding words to express it: here I was in Moscow, in this other wordly country, and at the same time, I wasn't really here at all and never would be. My days here were numbered, but not like those of other people, and so I would start counting the days and stop and start again, and so and so forth, and this for six years. That's what Oktyabr is about: arriving and leaving at once, without the slightest time in between." (Abderrahmane Sissako)

Abderrahmane Sissako
Sissako Abderrahmane was born in 1961 in Kiffa, Mauritania. Childhood in Mali then back to Mauritania in 1981 before leaving for URSS in 1982. He graduated from the VGIK in Moscow in 1989.
