TANGO FEROZ: LA LEYENDA DE TANGUITO
by Marcelo Piñeyro
Tango feroz is the story of Tango, an outspoken, idealistic young rebel who wants to sing and play rock'n'roll in Spanish. Unknown to him, his music inspires not only a movement in Argentinian Rock, but an entire generation who hang out in the underground club. Targetted by the police because of his blatant, rebellious lyrics, long hair and freespiritedness, he and his group of musicians end up sharing a cell with some students demonstrators. Tango falls in love with Mariana, a young woman who has abandoned her bourgeois past. In love, he continues singing his brand of rock'n'roll. But Tango's runins with the authorities, and his refusal to "sing" to the corrupt chief of police land him, a lengthy jail term on trumpedup drug charges. His release from jail into a changed world (his friends appear to have sold out) leads to despair and frustration. His outraged response to all this only leads to a further conflict with the authorities and he is tossed into a mental institution. Tango's salvation finally comes through Mariana, and his guitar.
