"Câncer is a film I shot in Rio de Janeiro in four days in 1968 for Mapa Filmes, my production house. There was neither a subject nor a preordained plan. Garcia edited the film in Havana between 1971 and 1972. The experimental department of Italian television curated by Italo Moscati took part in the production and programmed it for October, 1974. […] In Câncer there is the late introduction to Cinema Nôvo of the direct sound track. Before that time, there were not yet the material conditions that would have made its use creative. The direct sound track serves to give a more naturalistic base of information. In Câncer I used the direct sound track as a means of linguistic Communication among the actors. I suggested some ideas to them about the material we were treating, and they interpreted them according to their own intuitions and critical capacities." (Glauber Rocha)
