São Paulo. Miguel Mitralha, son of immigrants, works for a gourmet magazine. He is fired and finds a job in a small underground publisher of pornographic magazines. He shines out in his job and soon becomes the director. However, things do not go exactly as he foresaw.

"We wrote the screenplay for O pornógrafo in fifteen fantastic days at Baixado no Glicério, in my apartment where we could talk a lot… In the background we listened to the sound track of Sweet Smell of Success (1957, Alexander Mackendrick) with its sweet and magic jazz that its composer, Elmer Bernstein, never surpassed. We began to go over the great police films - Scarface (1930), The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre (1967) of Corman, White Heat (1949) of Walsh, Underworld USA (1960) of Fuller, Public Enemy (1931) of Wellman, and Double Indemnity (1945) of Wilder. As children of the generation of 1945, born with the Hiroshima atomic bomb, we decided to concentrate on the period of film noir. We prepared a sceenplay for a B film to be shown in black and white in 1970. At the time we had a fixation for the characters who talked in the first person singular. I was the gangster poet and Callegaro the gangster of the diabolical mise en scène. This is the way that our explosive character - Miguel Mitralha, São Paulo gangster, gross and lyrical son of immigrants - was born." (Jairo Ferreira)
