ANNA KARINA. IL VOLTO DELLA NOUVELLE VAGUE

ANNA KARINA. THE FACE OF THE NOUVELLE VAGUE

Country: Italy
Year: 1996
Duration: 38'

Anna Karina began her acting career in her native Copenhagen when she was fourteen years old. She went to Paris when she was seventeen and soon became JeanLuc Godard's favorite actress and, before long, his wife, as well as the favorite actress of the young authors of the Nouvelle Vague. ("Coco Chanel gave me this name. When she heard that my name was Hanne Karine Bayer, she immediately decided that this did not go well. She decided on Anna Karina.") To go over Anna Karina's life is to return to a Paris that was still involved in the Algerian war and to her chance encounters with famous personalities in the cafes of SaintGermain. It is a return to long walks along the boulevards and to her first jobs as fashionshow and photo model. Then there is JeanLuc Godard's telegram. He had seen her in a soap commercial and offered her the leading role in his second film, Le petit soldat. Then there is that little card saying - "je vous aime" passed to her on the set . There is a midnight date in a cafe... and the beginning of a new life. In the following years, she acted in such significant Godard films as Vivre sa vie, Alphaville, Une femme est une femme, Pierrot le fou, Bande ` part, and Made in USA. Her face and the roles she played in her long acting career by now are part of film history. Anna Karina was the icon of the Nouvelle Vague the face in black and white, tears and smiles, the closeup of the 1960's. It is not that Anna Karina is now living off of her memories, but inevitably everything leads her back to that time a golden age, a season that will not ever return and a time when she was not only an interpreter, but an inspirer and protagonist in her own right in the birth of modern cinema.

"I needed a young and lovely young woman like Anna Karina to play that role that is always present in the hard news stories and never taught in dramatic art courses. She grew up in the great and severe tradition of Asta Nielsen, Greta Garbo, and Pola Negri. Anna still manages to blow a little air in this sublime corset and still breathes a very modern perfume, that of improvisation." (JeanLuc Godard, for the presentation of the actors and actresses of Bande ` part)
