For the occasion of cinema's centenary Mohsen Makhmalbaf, the most popular and controversial Iranian filmmaker, runs an advertisement in newspapers calling for 100 actors to audition for parts in his new film, Salam Cinema. Some 5,000 people show up! Cinema Cinema is a film about Makhmalbaf making Salam Cinema, but it is not just making-of-film. Through its interviews with applicants, it offers a portrait of contemporary Youth Culture in Iran which is rarely seen by western eyes.

Maani Petgar

Maani Petgar was born in Tehran (Iran) in 1959. He is correspondent for "Film Monthly" and "Film International", (Iran), "Kajhan" (Australia), "Cinema 96" (Usa-Canada). In 1984 he began working in the film industry with Amir Naderi as stills photographer and assistant director. In 1986, Amir Naderi and Maani Petgar came to Australia at the invitation of the Sydney Film Festival for the screening of The Runner. Because his new film, Water, Wind, Dust, was banned in Iran, Amir Naderi went to Usa and Maani Petgar remained in Australia.
