Early on in the war, Jean Daligault, a young priest, enrolled in the Resistance. Arrested on the 31st August 1941, he was tried and sentenced by the people's court. He went from prison to prison and was repeatedly tortured. His martyrdom came to an end at Dachau, where he was executed in mysterious circumstances on the 5th April 1945, a month before the armistice. During his deportation, lean Daligault continued to paint in conditions that were more then precarious. As a painting surface he used little squares of newspaper.
