The protagonist is a twentyfouryear old woman who was born an illegitimate child and grew up in an orphanage. She is now a worker in a textile factory. She is in need of a human relationship, so she decides to go out looking for her parents. In this way she discovers that her mother lives in a village, has gotten married, and has had children. She decides to go there to visit her. She is received with a certain embarrassment and is introduced as the mother's cousin. Her stepfather takes advantage of a dancing [)arty in order to make advances to her. She is disgusted and goes off suddenly. In the train she meets a young man who courts her shyly. They become lovers, but the tic does not last. At a time later, a man shows up at her factory. In response to her preceding advertisement, he tells her a patently false story of love and death that involves her parents. The young woman is moved as she faces someone who could be her father. The days follow each other in a monotonous way until a young blonde man appears at the weekly dance. The two of them do not say anything, but an imperceptible bond seems to be made between them.
"I was struck by the unique intellectual quality of this young woman her hardness, and her almost masculine intimate behaviour. 0n the other hand, I have been long intrigued by the psychology of parent-child relations. […] So, as the critics said, I was not concerned with the issue of the 'new morality.' Although unconsciously, I have always had these types of ideas inside of me, seeing that they come out so blatantly in my film. In effect, I was stimulated by the fact that this young woman was someone, a personality who never depends on anyone else in that she is independent, adult, and - most of all - honest with herself."
