"Polanski and I recited the different parts in turn. One time he would do the man, one time the boy, and another time the woman. Then it was my turn and I recited. It was a very meticulous job. We wrote the dialogues in a very precise way and then immediately afterwards we recited them. It was the intuition that we had to do something new because in that period the films were so wordy. At the beginning of the Nouvelle Vague the dialogues were interminable. In Knife in the Water all the dialogue of the screenplay appears on the screen, extant. "I like Skolimowski a lot, but he is generally not well liked. He is self-secure, insolent, and provocative. And this does not go over very well… Everybody says that it was Andrzejewski that prevailed in the screenplay of Niewinni czarodzieje, but this is not true. It is enough to see Noz w wodzie, but I felt the need for a writer, someone with whom I could work out a common language. I turned to Skolimowski and we worked for two weeks. I put forward my idea - the three characters. He worked on the dialogues, and he worked well. In fact, Skolimowski is very rigorous, very organized, and has taught me very much. he can stay hours and hours to cut useless letters out a dialogue. He also possesses an enormous verbal memory.
