After the death of her adoptive mother, Hortense, a young black 27 year-old woman, decides to find her real mother. She is surprised, when they finally meet, to find her mother, Cynthia, is white and has a 20 year-old daughter. At first Cynthia is distraught at seeing the daughter she has forgotten about a long a time ago, and they proceeds to foster a deep relationship with her. Cynthia is then put to the task of making her family accept the fact that she has a black daughter.

Mike Leigh
MIke Leigh (Salford, Lancashire, 1943). Writer and film director. He trained at he Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, at Camberwell, and the London Film School. His first feature film was Bleak Moments (1970), which won at Chicago and Locarno Festivals. From 1973 to 1983 he turned out a series of BBC Tv films. His recent feature films have been highly successful internationally, all winning prestigious awards. In addition to his film work, Leigh has written and staged some 20 plays.
