On February 18, 1988, Pietro De Negri, owner of a canine grooming shop in Rome, went under the influence of cocaine and "freed" himself from the abuse that he had been forced to suffer for years from an exboxer. He tortured him for hours and then killed him. He was immediately sent to jail, but was granted his freedom after several months because he was judged incompetent to understand what he was doing and exercise his judgement at the time he committed the crime. As he was leaving prison, he came across a journalist who offered him a ride home. While he was riding with her, he relived those hours of insanity and told his story exactly like it was told to the police in the interrogation after the crime. The crudeness of the article coming out of this conversation helped to reopen the case....
