After studying for five years in Caracas, Marcos comes back home to old Angostura, the meeting place of the men who collect Venezuelan Guyana rubber. Doña Herminia, Marcos's mother, is warned by the evil Sute Cúpira: her son should not go into the forest where his two brothers have already died. Marcos falls in love with Araceli Villorini, the daughter of a rich Corsican merchant and only woos another girl to show off. Ignoring his mother's warnings, Marcos goes into the forest to collect rubber for Villorini. Here, the mysterious count Giaffaro and Sute Cúpira pay homage to him with some followers (the "twelve apostles"). Instead of paying Sute the tribute that he desires, Marcos kills him and returns to the city where he asks Araceli to follow him into the forest. Doña Herminia dies. Sacrificing her own honour and going against her fathers wishes, Araceli walks towards the forest with the hardened and implacable Marcos.
