A fruit market in the isthmus of Tehuantepec. The young Lupe has several admirers: Juancho, a sailor originally from Veracruz, Téhuan Ramón and the elderly don Atanasio. Lupe returns the sailor's affection, but the latter has to leave for a certain period of time. Since don Eulogio, Lupe's father, does not wish to grant his daughter's hand in marriage, don Atanasio confiscates his banana plantation. Lupe is thus forced to work in order to help her father. Ramón hits Atanasio and the mayor locks both of them up in prison. Lupe, who is grateful to Ramón, promises that she will marry him and keeps her promise until suddenly, out of the blue, Juancho comes back. Despite Lupe's rectitude, Ramón understands that the girl loves the sailor and parts hiding his pain at losing her. Lupe and Juancho happily take part in the Zandunga festival.
