The humble widower Pepe El Toro, the local carpenter, is the son of a dumb paraplegic and the father of a little girl called Chachita. His sister is a consumptive prostitute. Pepe, who is engaged to Celia, cries after hitting her because of her jealousy. The consumptive, guilty of paralysing her mother, is robbed of four hundred pesos by don Pilar, Celia's stepfather. For this reason, Pepe cannot complete a job commissioned by the rich Montes who makes sure that Pepe is unjustly accused of killing a money lender and sent to prison. Due to a series of problems the paraplegic and her consumptive daughter meet in the hospital; the latter finds out that she is Chachita's mother; Pepe is not, therefore, the father's child. Celia offends the consumptive and tells the little girl the truth. The consumptive dies and is shortly followed by the paralytic. Pepe is arrested for the second time but finally manages to clear his name. Free, at last, he marries Celia and they have a son.
