Bruno is a garage worker at Milan's Metropolitan Transit Authority. He goes through life in a sort of magical ritual. He gets up, eats breakfast, takes the tram, and spends hours at work. His alienation and more than that his loneliness have led him to invent an imaginary best friend, Gino, to whom he tells all his problems and joys. He does the same in his imagination with someone he crosses paths with on the same tram on the same route every day. Her name is Giovanna, a young worker herself. And it is on the tram that they finally talk to each other and discover that they have many things in common. Bruno happily tells Giovanna about Gino in such a way that he convinces her that Gino exists. At the usual stop, Giovanna and Gino go away cuddling each other, leaving Bruno more lonely than he was before if this is possible. And the story repeats itself.
