Las vacas. In Mezquital, a poor Otomí (Indian tribe who lived in Mexico before the coming of the Aztecs) family suffers the rigours of the drought with their new born daughter. A shopkeeper, who owns a cow, does not want to sell them anything on credit. Some rich people hire the woman as a nurse. At the cost of losing her and taking her away from his daughter, the husband, like the shopkeeper, now has his "cow".
Nuestra señora. An American anthropology student in Chiapas ends her thesis by saying that the chamulas Indios are wild. When she returns to the chamulas and sees them worshipping a reproduction of La Gioconda that they have stolen from her, she destroys her thesis.
El tuerto. In a town of Yucatan, the children tease a small child with a squint. The child's mother tries, in vain, to have him cured by a witchdoctor. Finally, they make a pilgrimage to the Tiximin sanctuary where the child is blinded by a firecracker. Noone will ever tease him again.
La potranca. In the State of Veracruz, an anthropologist studying the Tajin pyramids becomes obsessed by a young native girl who he tries, in vain, to seduce. The anthropologist offers to buy tue girl from her father. Her father agrees but asks for the anthropologist's wife, in exchange at double the price.
