Biography

film director

Aki Kaurismäki

The thirty-six-year old Finn Aki Kaurismäki (Orimattila, 1957) is a director as well as screenwriter, editor, actor, and producer. He is an ex-critic and organizer of a festival in Lapland. Kaurismäki was the great discovery of European cinema of the late 1980's. He made all his films inside of about a decade and at an unusual pace, especially for a country like Finland, even though some of his films were made abroad. All his films were produced by the production house that he runs with his brother Mika. They are low-cost, short in length, quick improvised, and carry a heavy intellectual charge.
