In Los Altos de Jalisco, following the murder of his parent, their child, Salvador, remains with the drunken, lazy Chaflán, under the guardianship of his Spanish godfather Radilla, who owns a tavern. When Salvador grows up, Radilla teaches him to play cards, to shoot, to cockfight and to raise cattle. After saving a little girl's life, Salvador meets Carmela, the little girl's aunt. In spite of the fact that she is also being courted by the elegant Felipe, they fall in love. Another Spaniard, the exAndalusian bullfighter Malasuerte, is wounded by a gunshot at Radilla's tavern and healed by a doctor. He tells Salvador the name of his parents' murderers ~ a cock owner who is a swindler and his five accomplices. Salvador, already known as El Ametralladora, kills them. To prevent her father Salas (a rancher) from falling into disgrace, Carmela is forced to marry Felipe even though Salvador has beat him in a fight and at horse racing.
