In 1914, the soldier Miguel Ángel, together with his friends, forms a group of rancheros who decide to join Pancho Villa's army. During a battle, Máximo is wounded and dies while saluting Villa. Martín also dies heroically while throwing a grenade at a fort. Tiburcio, Rodrigo and Melitón offer to talk to an enemy general but are arrested. Although, they are saved by the intervention of Villa's followers, Rodrigo dies during a shootout. Villa enrolls the three rancheros who have survived as reserves. The three are forced to play "Russian roulette" in the darkness, a pistol is thrown into the air; the bullet wounds Melitón who prefers to commit suicide rather than face humiliation. On the train carrying Pancho Villa to Zacatecas there is an outbreak of smallpox. Miguel Ángel becomes ill and Tiburcio is forced to kill him. When Tiburcio realizes that Villa is afraid of the epidemic, he jumps off the train and returns, disillusioned, to this home town.
