"BETTY BEE" (SOPRAVVIVERE D'ARTE) "CIAO BUCCHI"
by Didi Gnocchi
The story of Betty Bee, a thirty-seven-year-old Neapolitan woman who emancipates herself thanks to the success she achieves with art. A woman with even lower than working-class status, she frees herself from a fate marked by the acts of violence she suffered in her childhood. She manages to climb up the social ladder in a way that would have been otherwise excluded, move out of Ponticelli, and collect a series of successes. She is the mother of two daughters that she had of "two different men" - nine-year-old Sara and fourteen-year-old Eleonora. She moves about Naples with the boldness and vital force of someone who has to think all the time about survival and to fight a constant war with the world.
"The classical twentieth-century disciplines - sociology, journalism, and psychoanalysis… - have long been unable to read and decode the complexity of reality. Above all, they do not manage any longer to plot out future scenarios in any convincing way. Now perhaps the artist is the only person who is the sole 'special correspondent' from reality and who is capable of emitting interesting signals. Only the artist is freer from ideological baggage. Only the artist has more sensitive antennae" (Didi Gnocchi).
