CINECRONACHE PARTIGIANE

PARTISAN NEWSREELS

Country: Italy
Year: 1996
Duration: 45'

This film is constructed from images taken from the cameras of the very few partisan camera persons - the material that Franco Antonicelli defined as the "incunabula" of the new film art. The film constructs a faithful chronicle of everyday life and happenings from the formation of the first bands to the days of insurrection and liberation. It is accompanied by a musical commentary and by the voices of the witnesses. It contains selections from: don Giuseppe Pollarolo's Momenti di vita partigiana, Claudio Borello and Michele Rosboch's La Brigata Moro, Renato Vanzetti's Alla vigilia dell'insurrezione and the anonymous Torino liberata.

"These are imperfect, sometimes shaky, images, many of them are cut in a typically amateurish way. However, they are extraordinarily, passionately authentic. They were shot precisely during those 20 months, most of all for the pleasure of shooting. Further, the camera people overcame the burdens of fatigue and of the dangers this could represent for themselves and for others. These are really not repeatable images. They are very far from being refined, but they are also far from the dull taste and banality of most of the images shot by the official army newsreel services" (Paolo Gobetti).
