A young producer, two years after his first film and trying to create its sequel, discovers amongst the myriad kind (and not-so-kind) telephone messages suggesting an array of possible plots, an invitation to show his first film at the cultural association of a poor and run-down district (Cep) of Bari, Italy. The film Nella mischia is to be shown to a group of local youngsters. Time and time again, the cultural association's director points out that the centre is the only source of local entertainment: there are no gyms or playing-fields, and certainly no pubs or night-clubs. As a result, the producer concludes that his new film must not consist of any of the plots he has so far been unable to decide upon but, rather, something completely fresh and ground-breaking. He thus gathers together a team, a handful of actors, and commences work

Gianni Zanasi
Gianni Zanasi (Vignola, Modena, Italy, 1965), after studying philosophy at the University of Bologna, enrolled at a theatrical writing school and took a film course directed by Nanni Moretti. He then attended the Centro sperimentale di cinematografia in Rome, where he received his filmmaking degree in 1992. Three years later, he debuted with Nella mischia, selected for the Quinzaine des réalisateurs in Cannes. He then directed Fuori di me (1999), and A domani (1999), which was presented in competition in Venice. His 2004 documentary La vita è breve ma la giornata è lunghissima received a Special Mention in Venice, where he later presented Non pensarci (2007), subsequently developed into a TV series. The Torino Film Festival presented La felicità è un sistema complesso (2015) in last year’s edition.
