GIOVANI HOLDEN

«CATCHER IN THE RYE»

Country: Italy
Year: 1999
Duration: 59'

"The documentary is the result of our desire to go around Italy in order to seek out some answers about the world of youth. We wanted to take on the very genre of the documentary and overhaul it by treating it formally like a rock video. This would be something that would be a fitting way to win over and keep the attention of the people the work was about and for - the youth. There was one great question which was at the center of all the individual questions that were asked of the young people interviewed: what was the idea of the future and hence of their own lives that young people had? The geographical and narrative blocks around which the topic was divided were: the South (Sicily) with its enormous potential and the idea that nothing can be done; the North (Milan) with the conviction that everything can be done; and the North (Treviso) with the feeling that everything has already been done by the parents. These are the hinges around which rotate all the ceremonies that were selected to tell the story of a little piece of that many-natured world of youth: night, work, music, values, and the show business" (Umberto Marino).
