An important three-day folk festival is held every five years near carnival time in the town of Sampeyre in Val Varaita at the foot of Monviso. It is rich in local traditions and has been jealously conserved throughout the centuries. The film tells the story of the 1982 festival through interviews with its leading figures.
"The film is structured with an eye towards rigorous ethnographic research that blends in with the rhythm of the festival in a natural way. What comes out of this is the choice to have a long film that mirrors the slow pace of the peasant and mountaineer world that is still tied in with a type of sensitivity that follows the rhythms of the succession of seasons and natural events rather than a conception of time that is abstract and mathematical, that thinks of time as individual pieces that are all the same and comparable to one another" (Paolo Gobetti).
