The cinema of Idrissa Ouédraogo begins to take shape with a slow, light pan shot. It carries us a vision of the physical presence of these places and the bodies that inhabit them. Les écuelles is set in a country village in Burkina Faso. It is filmed drawing from that horizontal visual quality that is to become one of the most profound and distinctive signs in all the works of the director. Ouédraogo follows the handicraft work on bowls with simple gestures - all the necessary phases for bringing the handicraft work to completion. Ouédraogo shatters the barriers between documentary and fiction and initiates a kind of cooperation between these two categories that become bodies that are no longer mutually exclusive and that attract each other in order to produce new identities and theoretical approaches.
Les écuelles is Idrissa Ouédraogo's second short film, but it is the first film of his that reached an adequate audience. This film has been presented alone and as part of a feature anthology film entitled De Ouaga ` Douala en passant par…Paris (1987). This feature was a curious device for distribution that united three short films linked by an episode of reminiscences. The other two films are by the Camerunese director Jean-Marie Teno - Hommage (1984) and Fièvre jaune-Taximan (1985).
