Max Fischer is one of Rushmore Academy's worst students. However, this does not prevent him from producing the school rag, as well as being the architect behind most of what goes on there. He develops a crush for a teacher Miss Cross, and hatches a plan to win her affections. He thus comes to meet, and becomes friendly with, a wealthy industrialist called Blume. Max, however, manages to get expelled from Rushmore, and discovers that Blume is also after the object of his desires.
