The story of a married couple, rich landowners immersed in a peasant universe that is motionless and oppressive, their existence marked by absences, missed encounters and silences. She is in love with the coachman, while he harbors feelings of ill-will. A conventional married relationship represented by the latent conflicts of passion, weakness and stifled desires.

Carlos de Oliveira, who worked a bit with me, saw that the movie version of his novel necessarily required a critical reading on various levels, a reading which had to lead to the creation of a new manuscript articulated in audio-visual terms" (Fernando Lopes).
