The story centres on Rya-Rya, a comely daughter of farm labourers, who at the film's opening scandalizes her circle by taking a swim in the nude. Her young man Nils as a result spurns her at a barn dance. She leaves the dance, pursued by Henrik who manages to seduce. When after some time Nils wants her back Rya-Rya is expecting a child by Henrik. They marry and move into a cottage on the estate. Because of rumours about the woman, Henrik gives up the cottage and the family leaves the estate. Returning after several years they are housed with the other labourers. She lives for her children. One day Rya-Rya collapses during her work. On her death-bed she asks Henrik to forgive her unfaithfulness. He answers that she was a good wife.

Alf Sjöberg
Born in Stockholm in 1903, he recited at the Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern until 1928 and became its director in 1930. He debuted in films with Den Starkaste (The Strongest) in 1929, but immediately abandoned filmmaking since he didn't feel comfortable in the world of moving images. In 1940 he made his second full-length film, Med Livet Som Insats (Life as a Contribution). Fröken Julie (Miss Julie), based on the homonymous play by August Strindberg, won at the Cannes Film Festival in 1951. Alf Sjöberg died in 1980.
