Rich Bower had always hung out with criminals, but decides to change his life and become the manager of a hip-hop group. The band makes a big hit, especially with upper-middle-class white kids, who get to discover a culture that is very different from their own. Rich makes friends with the documentary filmmaker Sam Donager and with her husband Terry, a perverse and fascinating character. Meanwhile, a New York police detective, Mark Clear, is conducting and an investigation into Rich, who is suspected of having blackmailed a childhood friend of his, Dean, who has since become a famous basketball player.

James Toback

James Toback was born in 1946. He graduated from Harvard University and taught at the City College of New York. He worked as a reporter for magazines such as "Esquire", "Harpers", "Dissent", and "Commentary". In 1974 he debuted as a feature film screenwriter with The Gambler, directed by Karel Reisz. He won an Oscar nomination in 1991 for his screenplay for Bugsy, directed by Warren Beatty. His first film as a director was Fingers, starring Harvey Keitel. His documentary, The Big Bang, won him an Oscar in 1989.
