Jimmy Fingers, an aspiring concert pianist, continues to practice a famous composition by Bach in preparation for an exam at Carnegie Hall. His father Ben and his friend Anita beg him to call in money owed him from illegal betting. Jimmy, unconvinced, does as his father requests, but doesn't feel up to challenging a rival boss. The musician falls in love with Carol, a prostitute, and receives threats from her pimp, Dreems. Jimmy fails the exam at Carnegie Hall and shortly thereafter learns that his father has been assassinated. In revenge, the young musician kills the gangster who ordered his father's death.
