Byron Levin, a young, anonymous bank clerk who lives with his grandfather and with Vicky, a young woman who sells books, is offered a million dollars by the magnate Stockheinz to kill President Prado, the head of a small Central American country. Byron, who in the meantime has become Mrs. Stockheinz' lover, refuses the offer because he is a friend of Prado's. The millionaire has Levin fired in the attempt to force him to change his mind. Byron leaves for Costa Salva with Mr. and Mrs. Stockheinz. The young man tries to double cross Stockheinz and save Prado's life, but things get terribly complicated.

James Toback

James Toback was born in 1946. He graduated from Harvard University and taught at the City College of New York. He worked as a reporter for magazines such as "Esquire", "Harpers", "Dissent", and "Commentary". In 1974 he debuted as a feature film screenwriter with The Gambler, directed by Karel Reisz. He won an Oscar nomination in 1991 for his screenplay for Bugsy, directed by Warren Beatty. His first film as a director was Fingers, starring Harvey Keitel. His documentary, The Big Bang, won him an Oscar in 1989.
