The central character is a woman without a name who is confronted by an interrogator. Twenty-six witnesses take the floor in the course of the exchanges between the interrogator and his subject. The interrogator's identity is indeterminate and he occupies a position that is no less ambiguous than the session itself, during which he alternates between interrogating the woman (accused, victim, opponent, partner?) and taking a gentler approach. At one moment he will concentrate directly on the woman only to focus exclusively on the witnesses at the next: watching them and listening to them. Their identity too remains elusive. In the absence of biographical detail and verifiable anecdote, the question of who or what they are is left undecided; they exist in virtue of their palpable presence and/or the mysteriousness of their speech. It is also never entirely clear what the woman is accused of. Most witnesses decide she is guilty at the end but the question is: of what? The one thing that is not in doubt is that she is an outsider. At the precise moment when she begins to appear definable she escapes from the dance into which each observer tries to draw her. Is she perhaps actually no more than the kaleidoscopic view constructed by the interrogator and his witnesses?
