SOLE

SOUL & SOIL
by Mariangela Barbanente
Country: Italy
Year: 2000
Duration: 52'

Women who find work in Apulia as day laborers have to submit to a lot more than just long, fatiguing, and taxing work hours. They are subject to the whims of the labor goons, men who hunt for low-wage hand workers, blackmail them often, and abuse them sexually. This is the story of Vita, Teresa, and Daniela, who are struggling to get control of their own futures in this strip of the third world in Italy.

"The phenomenon of illegally hiring farm workers for very low wages cannot be confronted head-on: no laborer can permit himself the luxury of talking badly about the person who is making it possible for them to survive. This documentary's challenge was to bring these women to the point of talking about their working life by starting from their private life. Their everyday existence is so subordinate to work that the "problem of illegal labor" saturates every moment of their existence" (Mariangela Barbanente).
