Jack Jericho lives in New York and teaches baseball at school. Although he is attracted by the many young women he meets, he doesn't get anywhere with any of them. The only one who is interested in him is Randy Jensen, a museum guide who has to deal with an alcoholic father and with a debt owed to a medium-caliber boss. The criminal offers to call off the debt if she goes with a gangster who has set his eye on her, but the girl confides in Jack in the hopes of finding another way out. Their only alternative is to gamble.

James Toback

James Toback was born in 1946. He graduated from Harvard University and taught at the City College of New York. He worked as a reporter for magazines such as "Esquire", "Harpers", "Dissent", and "Commentary". In 1974 he debuted as a feature film screenwriter with The Gambler, directed by Karel Reisz. He won an Oscar nomination in 1991 for his screenplay for Bugsy, directed by Warren Beatty. His first film as a director was Fingers, starring Harvey Keitel. His documentary, The Big Bang, won him an Oscar in 1989.
