The story takes place during the ten confused years of the "cultural revolution". Three men live on a raft on the river Mao. They drink, argue and fight. life has not been generous to all of them. The eldest, Pan Laowu, who had had an intense but terrible romance thirty years ago, is still a bachelor. He was criticized and humiliated without reason at the beginning of the cultural revolution. Zhao Ling, a middle-aged man, has a large family. He must save up to the last penny to feed his children. The youngest, Shigu, is in the darkest despair because his girlfriend, Gaixin, has been forced by the new district director to marry another man.
The story develops with the escape of Gaixin on the raft. Pan Laowu risks his life to protect the couple. The old district director, put to hard labor, is dying. The three decide to help him at any cost. Eventually Pan Laowu loses his life trying to save them all.

Wu Tianming
After graduating secondary school in 1960, Wu Tianming (1939) studied acting at Xl'an Film Studio. In 1976 he took coursing in directing at the Beijing Film Academy and returned to Xi'an to work as an assistant director. He directed his first film in 1979. When he became the manager at Xi'an, he hired numerous young directors, including Chen Kaige and Zhang Ymou. Wu was in Los Angeles when the news of the clashes in Tiananmen Square broke.. He decided to stay in the United States. He returned to his country only in 1994.
