Dan Rab` was born in 1956 in a kibbutz on the border of Lebanon. He ties in his own personal history with that of Italy and Israel. Dan lived in Milan until the mid-1980s. Then he returned to a kibbutz, where he remained for twelve years. He now lives in Haifa. The Water In Between is the intimate story of an idealistic Jew who is a Communist and non-religious.
"I had wanted to tell the story of Dan Rab` for many reasons. In his diary the relationships between private life, social life and political life were always interwoven. His sense of ethics questioned everything, even the things that seemed to have been completed and set to rest. His relationship with suffering is never something that could be co-opted. Dan lives in Israel today and talks about his country from a perspective that is neither Zionist nor religious. I made this film while building up a relationship of trust and reception, so that Dan could tell an intimate story even though the environment and living conditions were full of strife and violence."
