Roma ore 11

Rome 11:00
by Giuseppe De Santis
Country: Italy
Year: 1952
Duration: 105'

Attracted by an announcement offering a position as a typist, several hundred girls from all over Rome descend on the company's headquarters. They have to wait numerous hours, and at a certain pint one of the girls tries to trick the others and cut the line. This causes an uproar in the group and the stairway collapses. Many girls are bruised, some are only hurt slightly, others more badly, and one dies, despite prompt medical help. The unfortunate incident has various consequences: some of the young women carry on as usual; the middle-class girl who wanted to become independent so she could follow her boyfriend finds the courage to leave her family; the mistreated maid returns to her hometown; one of the girls, who is pregnant, can't hide her condition any longer; the girl who started the uproar is called before the police, but it turns out she wasn't the one who was responsible for the accident.

film director

Giuseppe De Santis

Giuseppe De Santis (Fondi 1917 - Rome 1997) began working in cinema in the 1940's as a critic, screenwriter and assistant to Luchino Visconti on Ossessione (1942). He participated in the Resistance in Rome and, in 1946, worked with Aldo Vergano on Outcry. In 1947 he debuted in directing with The Tragic Hunt and, two years later, directed his masterpiece Bitter Rice. In 1950 he made Under the Olive Tree, which was filmed in Lazio and is the ideal continuation of the preceding film. He then made Rome 11:00H one of his biggest international successes. In Yugoslavia he directed Road a Year Long (1958), and he went on location in the Soviet Union to direct Attack and Retreat (1964), one of his most emotional films.
