Biography

film director

Charles Laughton

Charles Laughton (Scarborough, Yorkshire 1988 ñ Hollywood 1962) began his career as a theatrical actor in his homeland, England, and became a movie actor when films became talkies. A cultured and refined actor, he brought a gallery of notable characters to life, from Commander Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935, by Frank Lloyd) to Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939, by William Dieterle), from the lawyer in Witness for the Prosecution (1957, by Billy Wilder) to the conservative politician in Advise and Consent (1961, by Otto Preminger). In 1937 he founded his own movie production company, Mayflower Pictures. A Hollywood regular, in 1950 he became an American citizen. He directed only one film, which soon became a cult movie: The Night of the Hunter.
