Tute bianche, un esercito di sognatori

The Tute bianche, an Army of Dreamers

Country: Italy
Year: 2002
Duration: 30'

The Tute Bianche are the rebel sons of economic globalization, their only weapons are plastic and words protesting against the Empire's domineering attitude. They are the speakers for the "invisible ones", the ghosts, those who have no representation and no rights. Against the background of the social center Rivolta, amongst the factories of north-eastern Italy, the documentary tells the story of the most original and controversial group of the Italian no-global archipelago, using the words of Luca Casarini, Beppe Caccia and other former Tute Bianche, and featuring previously unseen images from their archives. All the voices are from within the movement, they recall the stages of their journey, from Italy to the Chiapas, all the way to the days in Genoa, where the Tute Bianche removed their uniforms forever and declared their disobedience.

"I tried to tell the story of this movement from its most significant territory, the North-East of Luca Casarini, but the initial project that Arte had proposed to me (to follow an Italian group of no-globals as they prepare new strategies for the 2001 WTO meeting) was dramatically changed by the days in Genoa, which shifted the axis of the story, to a before and an after of the movement. In this way, it became necessary to tie the present of the Tute Bianche to a journey into their past" (A. Marena).
