It is one of the most famous tales of The Dubliners, James Joyce's debut as novelist in 1914. The Irish writer wanted to give a testimony of Dublin common life, dominated by frustrations, disappointments and inability to act, justifying, in this way, his voluntary "exile". In the character of Eveline, a female psychology is drawn in its contrasts, undecided between tradition family values where it belongs and the "new".
