Gina Kim's Video Diary

Year: 2002
Duration: 154'

This autobiographical documentary combines video art and "film diary" techniques. It tells the story of Gina who, at 22 years of age, leaves Korea to flee from the authority of her mother and a terrible destiny which would force her, too, to become an overweight housewife. Gina is so traumatized by this possibility that she starts becoming anorexic. Desperate, she goes to the United States, where her dreams soon crumble. For six years, she obsessively documents her life: through narcissistic communications she reveals her gradual decline - until she is hospitalized - and her passage from post-adolescent fears to a more adult acceptance of herself, her body, her mother.

Biography

film director

Gina Kim

Gina Kim was born in Seoul (Korea) in 1973. She graduated from the Seoul National University School of Fine Arts before moving to the United States, where she studied at Cal Arts. There, she dedicated herself to studying the body and the desire to withdraw oneself from it, telling of experiences, fears and personal doubts through video diaries which have won numerous prizes throughout the world. Anorexia (Flying Appetite, 1998), the commercialization of the female body (OK Man, This is Your World, 1995), and isolation (Morning Becomes Ecletic, 2001) are the themes she confronts in her first works and reflect her tormented interior universe. Her latest works are Gina Kim's Video Diary (2002), about her conflictual relationship with her mother, and Invisible Light (2003), her first full-length fiction film.
