Aleksandr Burov and Aleksandr Sokurov met during the late 1970's at VGIK and since then have often worked together on documentaries and fiction films. In this short film, Burov sketches an intense and personal portrait of his friend-maestro during the difficult period when Russkij Kovceg was being produced. The short was made for a television series on the Kultura channel, dedicated to contemporary Russian artists, for the Tricentennial of St. Petersburg.

Aleksandr Burov

Aleksandr Burov is a director of photography and photographer. He was born on August 2, 1958 in Leningrad. In 1981 he graduated from VGIK in direction of photography under the guidance of T. Lobova. He has worked on numerous productions in Leningrad, Moscow and abroad. He has taken part in the "necro-realistic" movement, collaborating with Euvgenij Yuffit on Serebryanye golovy, among others. He has directed the photography of many of Aleksandr Sokurov's films, including the recent Otec i syn.
