Wattstax is a sort of ìblack Woodstock,î a six-hour concert that was
held at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1972, when 100,000 people united to
commemorate the Watts revolt (1965) and celebrate the famous black music
record label, Stax. Much more than just a simple concert film,
Wattstax is the portrait of the black community seven years after
the Watts revolt. The film is brought to life by the comments of the
area residents and by observations, often irreverent, on what it means
to be black in America.
