Berg, who has recently
arrived in Kuala Lumpur, meets Andrew and agrees to rent a room with him in an
old bungalow. Berg is still suffering from an old love story and spends his days
lazily wandering from room to room, making friends with the other renters in the
bungalow. He starts to discover the strange relationships connecting the other
people in the house and, in particular, the mystery surrounding a former renter,
a painter who disappeared three years earlier and perhaps married his
cousin.
"The first time I went to a bungalow in Kuala Lumpur, I
immediately thought that I had to shoot a movie in one. I went through some old
material and pulled out the screenplay of a romantic comedy I had written years
before, about some young people who share an apartment. I changed the story a
little, keeping a few of the elements, and the result is Room to Let.
It's still a romantic comedy, but with a different spirit." (J.

James Lee
James Lee (Ipoh, Malaysia, 1973) studied graphic design and later dedicated himself to theatrical acting and directing. In 2001, he shot his first feature film, Snipers, followed that same year by Ah Beng Returns. After founding the production company Doghouse73, in 2003 he produced the documentary The Big Durian by Amir Muhammad. In 2005 he won the award for Best Asian Film and the FIPRESCI Award at the Bangkok International Film Festival with The Beautiful Washing Machine and a special mention at the Oberhausen Festival with the short A Moment of Love. In 2007 he received his second award for Best Asian Film at the Bangkok Festival with the film Before We Fall in Love Again.
