Appunti per un film sulla lotta di Melfi

NOTES ON A FILM ABOUT MELFI BATTLE

Country: Italy
Year: 2004
Duration: 40

Max Weber wrote that a social class is defined as a community of destiny. This is the main point that has distinguished the battle of Melfi and the story told by this film: it was not only a union trade struggle on salary, on the difficult work shift and the thousands indiscriminate punishments. There was something more: a community of men and women from the South who fought for their rights of renewed dignity as citizens and workers, that after ten years, at last recognized a common destiny.

"I have the feeling that the workers' protest in Melfi against such hard and unjust working conditions has gained the public's sympathy. Today more than what would have happened yesterday, because in times of social and economic crisis like the one we are in, the social body identifies in a stronger emotional way with the ones who contrast this situation." (S. Consiglio)
