When a mobile TV crew films a police battalion
embarrassingly getting the worst during a shoot-out with five robbers,
the credibility of the police force is gravely compromised. During the
investigation, detective Cheung recognizes by chance the building in
which the outlaws have barricaded themselves. Inspector Rebecca decides
to take advantage of the opportunity for promotional purposes, and
transforms the assault of the Special Forces into a live television
show. The criminals are surrounded and initiate a sort of counter news
show with the help of internet and a few web cams.
"Breaking News is a police action film with a new spin. Hong Kong has
had a long tradition of great action cinema, and my goal was to do
something different. This is why I emphasised the issue of media
manipulation. I believe this is something the police is much involved in
these days, unlike in the past when they were only concerned with
nailing the bad guys." (To Johnnie)
