In the last book by Antonio Tabucchi, Tristano muore, there is sentence that says: "All music has already been played, we can only introduce some variations". This is what the title of the film is about. We probably don't live in the best of all possible worlds and the actor introduces some variations, he reacts through dance, singing, poetry of images that speak about the difficult themes of this new century, like unemployment. Run down factories, industrial crisis, wage supplementation fund, detention centres for illegal immigrants, the G-8 days in Genoa, alternated with images taken from Dreyer's film, La passion de Jeanne D'Arc (1928). A puzzle of texts by writers, poets and musicians and newspaper's articles in a world of images where all music has already been played. We can only introduce variations.
